â˘Role of Lexico-Grammar Lexico-grammar functions as an intermediate level in the language system, coding meanings between content and expression (sounds). Unlike simpler semiotic systems (e.g., traffic lights), which have a one-to-one correspondence between meaning and expression with limited meanings, lexico-grammar allows language to break this bi-unique relationship. This enables an infinite number of meanings to be generated from a finite set of sounds by combining units (words) into grammatical structures. â˘Simultaneous Meanings in Language Simultaneous meanings occur when a single linguistic unit conveys multiple layers of meaning at once. For example, the word "John" carries ideational meaning (the person named John) and interpersonal meaning through intonation (e.g., statement, question, annoyance). An illustrative sentence is: "John eats poached eggs."
