Chapter 4:
What defines an electrolyte?
Apuntes
Chapter 4: Chemical Reactions: An Introduction A chemical reaction involves a change from reactant substances to product substances and the product substances will have physical and chemical properties different from those of the reactants definition: solution: water with small amounts of dissolved substances in it 4.1 Ionic Theory of Solutions Certain substances produce freely moving ions when dissolved in water - these ions can conduct an electric current in aqueous solution eg. NaCl crystal is a solid of Na+ ions and Cl - ions held together in a particular geometry, when the solid is dissolved in water - the Na+ ions and Cl - ions go into solution as freely moving ions pure water has no charge (are neutral molecules) but can dissolve ions, eg. NaCl, which will move in response to an electric current in solution Electrolytes and Non - Electrolytes substances that dissolve in water definition: electrolyte: a substance that dissolve in water to give an electrically conducting solution in general: ionic solutions that dissolve in water are electrolytes - but not all electrolytes are ionic substances eg. HCl(g) (gaseous hydrochloric acid) is a molecular substance HCl(g) dissolved in ...
