H istory is divided into 5 main stages. W e are going to learn all about the ANCIENT AGE . The ancient age begins in 40 0 BC. he w n writing was created and ends with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AC. During this period, the FIRST CI VILZATIONS a ppeared and developed in different places . For example:  Mesopotamia was the first city state.  Egypt with its pharaohs and pyramids.  Greece with its wise phi losophers and the Olympics.  Rome with its strong gladiators and a great empire. The main CHARACTERISTICS of the ancient age are the following. U rban life began to d evelop causing CITIES to grow a nd the number of INHABITANTS the y had increased. In these cities, POLITICAL POWER was in the hands of kings, emperors and pharaohs . The POPULATION was divide d into free men and slaves. F ree men enjoyed many rights and owned the land and also the slaves. The slaves were prisoners of war. They had no rights and always were made to do the hardest tasks.
