# Periods of time Years 1558 to 1901 – a time famous for civil war, conspiracy, rebellion, plague, fire, revolution, industry and empire. Several periods in British history are covered: #The late Tudor period (1558–1603): This book begins in 1558, the year Henry VIII's youngest daughter (Elizabeth) became queen. She remained queen for 44 years. This is a time when Spain tried to invade England, when Shakespeare wrote his plays, and when English explorers and traders visited distant lands and tried to establish settlements there. #The Stuart period (1603–1714): The Stuart royal family reigned. Events such as the Gunpowder Plot, the English Civil War, the Great Plague, the Great Fire and the Glorious Revolution took place. In this period a king was executed – and for a short time, the country didn't have a monarch! #The Georgian period (1714–1830s): A series of kings named George (and one named William!) ruled after the Stuart period.
