• How Your Eyes Use Reflection How Your Eyes Work Light reflecting off an object enters your eyes through an outer membrane called the cornea. Because the front of the eye is curved, the light passing through it bends, or refracts, in the same way as light passing through glass. Light then enters the pupil, which is the round hole at the front of the eye. The colored area around the pupil, the iris, opens and closes to control the amount of light entering. From the pupil, light passes to the lens, which refracts the light again. It then reaches the retina at the back of the eye as an upside-down image. The retina is a thin layer of tissue that contains millions of light-sensitive nerve cells. These cells convert light into electrical impulses, which are transmitted to the brain to produce the image for you to see. The brain eventually turns the image the right way up so you see things correctly.
