# The Human Reproductive System ## Overview • Humans reproduce sexually. • Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of the male gamete nucleus (sperm) with the female gamete nucleus (egg/ovum). • This fusion is called fertilization. • The fertilized egg forms a zygote. • The zygote will grow and develop into a new human being. ## Female Reproductive Organs • **Ovaries**: Two ovaries produce female gametes (eggs/ova). • **Fallopian Tubes**: Lead from the ovaries to the uterus. They have funnel-shaped openings close to, but not connected with, the ovaries. This is the site of fertilization, where the sperm meets the egg. • **Uterus**: A muscular organ with thick walls. It is small in size and shape but can expand during pregnancy. • **Cervix**: A narrow opening at the base of the uterus, controlled by muscles, leading from the uterus to the vagina. • **Vagina**: A passage leading from the cervix to the outside.
