1. THE SOUND
What is the frequency of a sound wave measured in?
Apuntes
1. THE SOUND Sound is a pressure wave which is created by a vibrating object. These vibrations set particles in the surrounding medium (typical air) in vibrational motion, thus transporting energy through the medium. Since the particles are moving in parallel direction to the wave movement, the sound wave is referred to as a longitudinal wave. The result of longitudinal waves is the creation of compressions and rarefactions within the air. 1.1 Main features of sound A. Amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and period ● Amplitude: refers to the maximum displacement of air particles from their rest position as a sound wave passes through a medium. In simpler terms, it represents the "height" or "strength" of the wave. Amplitude is often measured in units such as Pascals (Pa) for pres sure amplitude. In the context of perception, amplitude corresponds to the loudness of the sound. ● Frequency: is the number of oscillations or cycles of a sound wave that occur in one second. It is often measured in Hertz (Hz), where one Hertz equals one cycle per second. In perception, frequency is associated with the pitch of the sound. Higher frequencies are pe rceived as higher pit...
