• Subtopic: The Dominance of Europe in 1908 In 1908, world events were dominated by the continent of Europe. There was more industry and wealth in Europe than anywhere else in the world. Most of the ships trading across the oceans were owned by Europeans, and large parts of Asia, Africa, and South America had been colonized by European countries. Tremendous political and social changes have taken place since then, making the world of the 1990s a very different place. One of the most important causes of change was the First World War. This chapter describes how and why the war broke out. • Subtopic: The Assassination at Sarajevo On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife visited the town of Sarajevo. The Archduke was the heir to the throne of the empire of Austria-Hungary. Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia, which, at that time, was part of this empire. As the car passed along the street, someone threw a bomb at it. The bomb bounced off the back of the car and exploded, injuring an officer in the car behind. The Archduke and his wife were unhurt.
