The Old Regimen, also called the Ancient Regimen, was a political, social and economic system that was developed in many parts of Europe up to the 18th century. This type of society was based on estates and had an agrarian economy, and it was ruled by an absolute Monarch. The characteristics of the Old Regime: 1. Society was divided into three estates: the nobility, the clergy and the commoners (the third estate). 2. The clergy and the nobility were the privileged estates. They have a lot of advantages over commoners, for example, they did not pay taxes and they were judged by special laws and courts. 3. Your estate was determinated at birth. Except the clergy mobility, nobles didn´t move down and commoners did not move up.
