1.1. What’s the scientific method? Although there isn’t a set of strict rules that must be followed, there’s a set of established stages in all research processes: Observation and asking a question: In this stage, we look for information about the problem or similar problems. Formulating hypotheses: Hypotheses are ideas about the factors that may be involved in the problem we’re going to investigate or the results we can expect. Testing and experimenting: We test our hypotheses one by one. To do this, we design an experiment that enables us to take measurements of each of the factors we want to examine. Results and conclusions: Once we have taken measurements, we organise them in tables and graphs, which will help us see the results more clearly and draw conclusions. Scientific communication and formulation of laws or theories: A law or theory gives an overview of the problem and helps us predict what will happen in similar cases without having to repeat the whole process again. 7.1.
