Phonetics and its areas: Phonetics is the scientific study of sounds used in language, how sounds are produced refer to articulatory phonetics, how the sounds are heard and perceived refers to auditory phonetics, and how they are transferred from the speaker to the hearer refers to acoustic Phonetics. The central concerns in phonetics are: the discovery of how speech sounds are produced, how they are used in spoken language. how we can record speech sounds with written symbols and how we hear and recognise different sounds. Language according to Finch and Ortiz: Language has been defined as the human vocal noise ( or the graphic representation of this noise) used by a community for purposes of communication. Stages in the speech chain: First stage:linguistic (the speaker has a message to transmit to the listener) Second stage: articulatory (the speaker produces the movement of articulators for the speech mechanism). Third stage: accoustic (the sound waves travel to the listener) Fourth stage: perceptual (this is activated when the sound waves activate the listener's hearing).
