Unit 9: How should we respond to crime? ★ Vocabulary notes **Bystander** (noun): a person who is standing near and watching something that is happening but is not involved in it. An onlooker, a passer-by, a non-participant spectator. **The Bystander Effect:** Should we be bystanders? - A bystander: someone who doesn’t intervene (someone who doesn’t say or do anything when they see a problem or a person in need). - We can see the bystander effect everywhere. When there are other people around, we don’t feel responsible to help. The more people there are, the less likely you are to help. (If others aren’t worried, why should I?) **Tell someone off** (phrasal verb): to speak angrily to someone because they have done something wrong. - The teacher told me off for swearing. **Break into something** (phrasal verb): to enter a building or car by using force, especially for the purpose of stealing something. - Someone broke into my car and stole the radio. - Her house was broken into last week. **Report** (verb): to give a description or information about something (seen, done, etc.) to a person in authority. - We called the police to report the theft. - The accident was reported in ...
