1.What was the Cold War? (1947-1991) 1.1 ANTAGONISM BETWEEN THE TWO SUPERPOWERS The Cold War was a period of new international relations that emerged in 1947, after the Second World War until 1991. The main characteristic in this war was the conflict between the two superpowers. Each bloc had her own political and economic system: Western Bloc. Communist Bloc Capitalist economy Planned economy Democracy Totalitarism Liberalism One party The USA led the bloc USSR led the bloc 1.2 THE ORIGIN OF THE COLD WAR After the Second World War the two superpowers had lots of conflicts between them: 1. Gretel Civil War, confronted by Communists, that were excluded from a provisional government, and the Monarchists, that were supported by the UK and the USA, and they won. 2. Iron Curtain, it was established by Churchill, to describe the increasing political influence of the USSR over Eastern and Central Europe. The expression symbolised the boundary that divided Europe both politically and military. 3.
