# The atmosphere & hydrosphere vocabulary - **Exosphere**: The transition between the atmosphere and outer space. Some artificial satellites are found here. It is 500 km and more. - **Thermosphere**: The aurora borealis and aurora australis are formed. Artificial satellites orbit here, and space stations. It is from 80 km to 500 km. - **Mesosphere**: The gases in this layer slow down meteorites. This causes them to break up and form shooting stars. From 50 km to 80 km. - **Stratosphere**: This is a very stable layer, with little air movement. The ozone layer is situated here, between 20 and 30 km above the Earth's surface. With large amount of ozone. This gas absorbs nearly all the Sun's ultraviolet radiation. It is from 12 km to 50 km. - **Troposphere**: This layer is in contact with the surface of the geosphere. It contains 90 % of the air and 99 % of the water in the atmosphere. It is a very dynamic layer. Clouds form and weather phenomena occur here.
