Unit 2 Study Guide - The American Revolution **Causes of the American Revolution** • Proclamation of 1763 - Colonists couldn’t settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. (The King restricted westward expansion.) • Taxation without Representation - Parliament made laws and taxed colonists without allowing them to have representatives in England. • Mercantilism - Colonies were only allowed to trade with England. This included the Navigation Acts Laws. • Boston Massacre (1770) - British soldiers fired on colonists who were throwing rocks; used as propaganda. Crispus Attucks was the first killed. • Boston Tea Party (1773) - Colonists dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest the Tea Act. • Intolerable Acts (1774) - Britain’s punishment for the Boston Tea Party (closed Boston Harbor, quartering soldiers, dissolved Massachusetts Government, and soldiers accused of crimes went back to England for their trials). **Colonial Response** • First Continental Congress (1774) - Sent grievances (complaints) to King George III and organized a boycott of British goods. • Second Continental Congress (1775) - Organized the Continental Army with George Washington as commander and wrote the Decl...
