About the author Rod Morgan is Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Bristol, a post he held prior to becoming HM Chief Inspector of Probation (2001–2004) and chairman of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (2004–2007). He is also visiting professor at the London School of Economics and at Cardiff University and a government-appointed adviser to the five criminal justice inspectorates for England and Wales. He has published extensively on crime, policing, prisons and punishment and is co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Criminology.
