• Subtopic: American Independence In the early 17th century, groups of people from England settled on the east coast of what’s now the United States of America. These settlements grew, and by the mid-18th century, they were organized into 13 Colonies, all under the rule of Great Britain. Over time, relations between the 13 Colonies and Great Britain became difficult. This was due to a series of controversial measures imposed by the British Parliament. These measures included the 1763 Royal Proclamation, which banned settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains. They also included several tax increases. This frustrated the colonists because they had no representation in Parliament. At the same time, the colonists were encouraged by liberal and Enlightenment thought.
