Manhattan. This is how we know New York City today – a huge metropolis … the vibrant heart of North America … full of traffic and neon signs. However, in the not so distant past, just a few hundred years ago, this wasn’t Broadway but the land of the Native Americans. In this movie, we’ll tell you about the Native American tribes, the advance of the European settlers, the early colonists’ fight for independence and the important part the railroads played in opening up the western part of the continent – and about the long journey to the United States as we know them today. When Christopher Columbus landed on the Bahamas in 1492, the islands were already inhabited by indigenous peoples. At that time, an estimated 7 million Native Americans lived on the North American continent in many different tribes. Today, Native Americans make up less than one percent of the overall population of the USA. The first explorers didn’t tell stories of gold or other riches, but described a hostile, almost desolate landscape.
