Intracranial tumors BENIGN BRAIN TUMORS Meningiomas Middle aged and older individuals, but can occur at any age They arise from arachnoid meningeal cells Classic slow growing tumors They get large before becoming symptomatic Clinical presentation: Seizures, gait difficulties, headache, cranial nerve palsies Other progressive neurological impairment Diagnosis --> CT and MRI If located at the base of the skull --> evaluate with angiography Treatment: No neuologic signs --> radiographic follow-up --> scans every 6-12 months Progressive symptom develop or lesion growth shown in imagin follow-up? Treatment is mandated Surgical resection Primary treatment Radiation therapy, chemotherapy or both Rarely used Vestibular schwannoma or Acoustic neuroma Slowly progresive, unilateral hearing loss associated with tinnitus Arise from the schwann cells of the vestibular nerve within the 8th cranial nerve complex Peak: 40-60 years Predominantly unilateral lesions Clinical presentation: Hearing loss, gait instability, ataxia Large tumors --> hydrocephalus can occur Lateral gaze nystagmus Diagnosis: MRI is the gold standard CT is often the first study Treatment Surgical resection Primary therapeutic ...
