•Ancient Rome The city of Rome was founded around the 8th century BC, with the myth dating it to 753 BC. According to legend, Romulus and Remus founded the city after being fed by a she-wolf. At that time, several villages united into a new city on the seven hills of Rome. Its location in central Italy, near the Tiber River, provided advantages: it was between several cultures—Latins (including Romans), Etruscans in the north, and Greeks in the south—facilitating trade. The Tiber River aided communication and trade, offering access to the sea. •Etruscans Living in northern Italy from around 900 BC to 500 BC, the Etruscans significantly influenced Roman culture and even dominated Rome for a time. They lived in city-states, relying on agriculture and trade. Romans adopted many aspects of their religion and built impressive necropolises for their dead. •Roman frontiers Roman territories extended around the Mediterranean Sea, called Mare Nostrum or Our Sea.
