Muslims who remained in the newly conquered Christian territories were called MudĂ©jars. They were allowed to retain their laws, customs, religion and some of their property. However, there were major inequalities. They had to pay special taxes and live in segregated neighbourhoods (morerĂas), and they could not socialise with people of other religions. The MudĂ©jars settled in rural villages. Most worked in agriculture, livestock farming and artisanship. They also became very skilled at construction and created their own style, called MudĂ©jar art.
