VOCABULARY TERMS 1️⃣ Element – A fundamental material consisting of only one type of atom. 2️⃣ Periodic Table – A chart in which all known elements are organized by their properties. 3️⃣ Atomic Symbol – An abbreviation for an element or atom. 4️⃣ Atomic Nucleus – The dense, positively charged center of every atom. 5️⃣ Electrons – Extremely small, negatively charged subatomic particles found outside the atomic nucleus. 6️⃣ Protons – Positively charged subatomic particles found in the atomic nucleus. 7️⃣ Neutrons – Electrically neutral subatomic particles found in the atomic nucleus. 8️⃣ Atomic Number – The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. 9️⃣ Nucleons – The particles found in the atomic nucleus (protons and neutrons). 10️⃣ Isotopes – Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. 11️⃣ Mass Number – The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus. 12️⃣ Atomic Mass – The weighted average mass of all naturally occurring isotopes of an element.
