Chapters 7–13 Summary (Basic English) Chapter 7: In Which I Visit Italy Juan continues to mourn Miri but finds distraction in his duties. He often looks after Diego's children, Paquita and Ignacia, keeping them from the studio. To entertain them, Juan visits Doña Trini, a local lacemaker, and asks for a kitten. He brings back a white kitten named Mooshi, which becomes a beloved pet. The King commissions Diego to travel to Italy to purchase paintings and paint the Infanta. Diego plans to travel with Juan, and the family returns to Seville during their absence. As they approach Seville, Juan feels homesick, remembering Brother Isidro. Chapter 8: In Which I Speak of a Small Red Flower Diego paints many portraits of the King and courtiers, including the Duke of Olivares. The King often speaks intimately with Diego during sittings. Various apprentices come and go; Juan listens to each lesson and applies it to his secret painting. Juan Bautista del Mazo, a vain but handsome apprentice, marries Paquita.
