7.1 CELL CYCLE PC1004 Fundamentals of life Introduction All life on Earth has a cycle. For example, the life cycle of humans is: we're born, we grow, enter puberty, we can reproduce, we age and then we die. Butterflies have a different life cycle: they're born in an egg, then a caterpillar comes out, when the caterpillar is fat enough it pupates where it transforms into a butterfly and after some time it dies. Cells have their own life cycle and we call it the cell cycle. The cell cycle The cell cycle is the series of events that occur as a cell grows, replicates its DNA, and divides into daughter cells. It’s vital for all life on Earth. It is like a choreographed dance that ensures proper cell growth and reproduction. The cell cycle can be divided into two main phases: cell division, and interphase. Interphase G1 Phase (Gap 1 / Growth 1): During this phase, there's growth, the cell doubles its organelles and accumulates materials needed for DNA synthesis. Checkpoint: The G1 checkpoint ensures that the cell has enough resources and favorable conditions to proceed. If everything is fine, the cell moves on to the next phase. This checkpoint prevents damaged or...
