UNIT 1.2 THE ORGANISATION OF THE HUMAN BODY How is the human body organized ? The smallest unit is the atom. Multicellular organisms are made up of cells. These are arranged into tissues, organs and systems. The human body contains approximately 37 trillion cells. That means that you ́re a multicellular living thing. The cell is the basic unit of life that makes up organisms. In humans and animals, are eukaryote. Tissues are a group of connected cells that perform the same functions. Organs are made up of several different types or tissues and have specific functions. Organ systems are composed of a set of organs that work together to perform complex functions. Emergent properties are that cells, tissues and system represent levels of complexity. At each level, the collection and interaction of each part gives rise to a new property, that the individual parts don ́t have. Basic unit of the human body The cell is the basic unit of life. All organisms are made of one or more cells, so is the structural unit of life.
