What was the French Revolution? It was a great political and social change that began in 1789 in France. The French people rose up against the absolute monarchy (the king had all the power). It ended with the fall of King Louis XVI and the creation of a republic. It marked the beginning of the Contemporary Age and spread as an example for other countries. --- 📌 Main causes of the French Revolution: 1. Social inequality → There were 3 classes: Clergy (privileges, they did not pay taxes). Nobility (privileges, they did not pay taxes). Third State (peasants, merchants, bourgeoisie, workers). They paid all taxes and had no rights. 2. Economic crisis → France was in debt due to: Wars (such as the US Independence War that France supported). Bad harvests that caused hunger and rising prices. 3. Absolute monarchy and waste → King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette spent too much on luxuries while the people suffered. 4. Ideas of the Enlightenment → Philosophers such as Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau and Voltaire inspired the people: Natural rights. Freedom. Equality. Government of the people. 5.
