HOLES (CHAPTERS 1-19) Chapter 1: Camp Green Lake is a dry desert, not a lake. The boys dig holes every day. The camp is very hot and dangerous because of rattlesnakes, scorpions, and yellow-spotted lizards, these lizards kill you if you touch them. Chapter 2: Camp Green Lake is a camp for “bad boys.” They believe digging holes builds character. Stanley chooses the camp instead of jail. Chapter 3: Stanley travels to Camp Green Lake. He remembers being bullied because of his weight and hopes to make friends at camp. Chapter 4: Stanley meets Mr. Sir. He receives camp clothes and learns that he must dig a hole every day. Mr. Sir explains that there are no fences because the boys cannot survive without the camp’s water. Chapter 5: Stanley meets Mr. Pendanski, the Warden, and the boys in Tent D: X-Ray, Armpit, Squid, Magnet, Zigzag, and Zero. The boys use nicknames instead of their real names. Chapter 6: Stanley remembers how he was arrested for stealing Clyde Livingston’s shoes. He explains that he found them after they fell from the sky, but nobody believed him.
