The Cell as the Basic Unit of Life Page 1 of 8 THE CELL AS THE BASIC UNIT OF LIFE All living organisms are made up of cells. The cell is the basic unit of life. It is the basic building block of all organisms. There has been an evolutionary development of unicellular life forms into multicellular life forms. Organisms may be unicellular i.e., made up of one cell or multicellular i.e., made up of many cells. In multicellular organisms many cells of the same kind interconnect with each other and perform a shared function to form tissues (e.g., stomach muscle). Many tissues combine to form an organ (e.g., stomach). Many organs make up an organ system (e.g., digestive system).
