Passive Voice Look at the following sentence in the active voice: Nearly 10% of Australians speak a language other than English. Now, see the same sentence in the passive voice: A language other than English is spoken by nearly 10% of Australians. To form a passive voice sentence: - The object of the active sentence becomes the subject. - The verb "to be" is used as an auxiliary in the same tense as the active sentence. - The main verb is changed to its past participle. - The original subject is preceded by "by" when it is important to specify who is responsible for the action. We use the passive voice: - To emphasize the action rather than the agent. - When the agent is unknown, generally understood, or obvious.
