WHEN TO SEND ENEMY SIGNALS People who live on the streets constantly seek handouts, especially in big cities. They can be persistent. But their persistence is not random. They target people who are more likely to give them money and aggressively pursue them. How do they know who has a soft heart and who is tough? Easy: they analyze friendly or hostile signals. If the target makes eye contact, the chances increase. If the target smiles, the chances increase. If the target shows pity, the chances increase. If you are constantly being approached by beggars and homeless people, it’s probably because you are unconsciously sending non-verbal signals that invite personal contact. Without personal contact, the chances of receiving money are nonexistent. Beggars know this and go after targets with a higher probability of success.
